Welcome to the 14th week of library story times and checkout. This week is a short week of school as Thanksgiving holidays are Wednesday-Friday, so there is no story time or lesson. Each class is coming in for checkout only.
The last few weeks I forgot to post...oops. Last week we read How To Catch A Turkey by Adam Wallace and Andy Elkerton. We talked about how Fiction means it is just a good story made up by the author and that Nonfiction teaches you something. After reading the story we talked about whether or not the book was Fiction or Nonfiction. (It was Fiction). First grade is checking out from 4 shelves and after Thanksgiving will be moving to the entire Everybody section. They are so excited!

Welcome to the 10th week of library story times and checkout. This week's lesson is a review procedures and checking out. 1st grade is also moving to choosing from 4 shelves to check out from so that they can move to the entire everybody section in December and for the rest of the school year.
Our read aloud this week is Harlem Grown by Tony Hillery. This is a true story that is a SCASL picture book nominee. Our activity is designing our own gardens by drawing them. This is a true story about a man in Harlem who noticed the need for fresh fruits and vegetables in the neighborhood and set about creating a farm on a vacant lot across from P.S. 175. What he learned, and shares in his book is that students are more likely to eat something they have grown. Gardening teaches teamwork/collaboration and patience. There is also a lot of trial and error in gardening and this is helpful in teaching children not to give up, but to try again. Welcome to the 9th week of library story times and checkout. This week's lesson is a review of the parts of a book and checkout.
Our read aloud this week is Pig the Monster by Aaron Blabey. It is a great story about being kind moderation. Welcome to the end of the 8th week of library story times and checkout. We have book fair this week and next week, so the week almost ended before I could publish my blog post. I videoed a read aloud for classes to play in the classroom of the SCPBA nominee The Chicken Who Couldn't by Jan Thomas. It is an amazing story about how believing in yourself can help you achieve great things in life.
Welcome to the 7th week of library story times and checkout. This week's lesson is a review of the parts of a book and checkout.
Our read aloud this week is Bedtime Bonnet by Nancy Redd. It is a great story that teaches you that while your hair care routine may be different from someone else's routine, that is okay. Our hair is like us, perfect no matter if it curly, straight, long, short, or somewhere in between. We should embrace our differences. It is also a SCPBA nominee. Our first graders have begun checking out from the shelves with a shelf marker. They are super excited to select from a broader selection than just the top of the shelves and a table. In a few weeks they will have the entire picture book section to choose from. We will be setting up at the end of this week for the book fair. The Bedford Falls Book Fair will be open from October 11th-20th. We will also be open the night of Trunk or Treat on October 14th. Welcome to the 6th week of library story times and checkout. This week's lesson is introducing the parts of a book and a refresher as to where you can find the author and illustrator's names on the book. (You can find them on the front cover, the spine, and the title page.) 1st grade is preparing for to start checking out from the shelves next week. We are talking about the spine label having an E on the top row for the Everybody section, and then the first 3 letters of the authors last name on the bottom row. They are starting to understand that we shelve books by the authors last name, so to look for the letter the last name starts with to find the series or authors they like.
Our read aloud this week is The Bear In My Family by Maya Tatsukawa. It is a great story about how the narrator has a bear living in their house. The parents treat it like it is a family member, but the narrator thinks it is too loud and messy. What could make our narrator change their mind about the bear in their family? It is also a SCPBA nominee. Welcome to the 5th week of library story times and checkout. This week's lesson is introducing the parts of the book and checkout.
Our read aloud this week is Ronan The Librarian by Tara Luebbe and Becky Cattie. It is a great story about how you don't have to stay the same. You can grow and change and try new things. It is also a SCPBA nominee. Welcome to the 4th week of library story times and checkout. The students are learning a song about the author and illustrators' jobs and we sing it each week before our read aloud. This week is our review of the jobs that authors and illustrators do and where to find their names on a book, and then checkout.
Our read aloud this week is The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds September 15th is International Dot Day which celebrates art and "making your mark." Be proud of what you do and let life inspire you to do great things and encourage others. We have a great display of art that kindergarteners and 1st graders have been inspired to draw/color. Welcome to the third week of library story times and checkout. It is a short week, but we are moving and grooving in the library. Most of our students have now learned our author and illustrator songs we sing each week before reading. They know the author writes the words of the book and the illustrator draws the pictures from the songs, but we will be going more into depth on their specific jobs and where to find their names on books in the coming weeks.
Our read aloud this week is If You Come To Earth by Sophie Blackall. It is a great story where Quinn gives possible visitors an instruction manual about Earth and its inhabitants. This is also the week I introduce the South Carolina Picture Book Award Nominees to our students. If you do not know about these awards, you can find out more information here. While we won't be able to read all of the award nominees, we will get to most of them before 4K, K, 1st, and 2nd vote on their favorites. We will get a school winner and then I will share the vote tally's with the SC Association of School Librarians so that our votes can be added to the rest of the votes from South Carolina to come up with our state winner who will receive the coveted SCPBA Winner sticker to place on the fronts of their book. Welcome to the second week of library story times and checkout. This week is a review of rules about conduct and handling the books, and checkout.
Our read aloud this week is This Is A School by John Schu. It is a story about how a school isn't just a building, but a place for people to come together and learn, collaborate, and be a community. This is a great way to remind students that a school is made up of all different types of children and adults. We can learn from each other and experience things through each others' eyes. |
