Welcome to the 6th week of library story times and checkout. This week's lesson is introducing the parts of a book and a refresher as to where you can find the author and illustrator's names on the book. (You can find them on the front cover, the spine, and the title page.) 1st grade is preparing for to start checking out from the shelves next week. We are talking about the spine label having an E on the top row for the Everybody section, and then the first 3 letters of the authors last name on the bottom row. They are starting to understand that we shelve books by the authors last name, so to look for the letter the last name starts with to find the series or authors they like.
Our read aloud this week is The Bear In My Family by Maya Tatsukawa. It is a great story about how the narrator has a bear living in their house. The parents treat it like it is a family member, but the narrator thinks it is too loud and messy. What could make our narrator change their mind about the bear in their family? It is also a SCPBA nominee.
