Last Friday, January 24th was Day 1 so I am including this in this week's wrap up. I had the pleasure of helping Mrs. McQuade's class make biscuits and fresh butter. It was so much fun for all of us. I sure do love those kiddos and enjoy all of my time with them. Look for pictures at the bottom of this post to see our experiences!
We are reading Jabari Jumps this week for the entire week. There is one more SC Picture Book Award Nominee to read before we vote in mid February. K and 1st students are very excited to use the computers/iPads to vote for something so important. The American Library Association (ALA) announced their 2020 Award winners Monday, January 27th. Here is the press release. Check out the titles to see if any you enjoyed are listed! On our 100th Day of School we awarded our KinderRangers their Super Reader Masks. Check out these amazing students in their superhero masks!

Read alouds: We are finishing up Dad and the Dinosaur and moving into Jabari Jumps. (The 6 day rotation means that books span more than 1 week.) Both of these titles are nominated for the South Carolina Picture Book Award. Librarians, teachers, parents, and students from all over South Carolina came together over the last year and read as many of the newly published books to narrow it down to the top 20. We are reading as many as we can over this school year so we can then vote for our school favorite so that our votes then go to the state to see the state winner. The last 2 years our school's favorite has also been the book that has won. Our Rocky Creek Rangers seem to be great at picking winners! We have also begun our 3rd 9 weeks Reading Challenge. It is titled Reading is a "Walk in the Park" for RCE Rangers. We have a walking path through the library, now named Ranger Park, with tic tac toe and hopscotch. The students are really enjoying this time to move and have fun. Our kindergarten book club is also starting this week. We will be reading Pete the Cat and Mercy Watson books when we meet twice a week. At the end of the school year we will have a celebration of some kind. It looks like our book club will be 8-10 friends. I always have so much fun with these kiddos! One has already told his mom that "his heart is happy" That made me feel really good. It is hard to believe we are in school week 2 of 2020! We are settling back into the groove of the year. This week we began on Day 5, so we stretch through 2 different lessons this week. We finished up Snowmen All Year and started Dad and the Dinosaur. I haven't had the chance to read any more of my professional book. (There was too much football on this past weekend and the National Championship was on Monday night.)
Dad and the Dinosaur is a great book that I am reading aloud for the second time. Last year I read it to several classes because it was a new book. This year I am reading it to all of my story time classes because it is a South Carolina Picture Book Award nominee. We have been reading these nominees at least once a month since school started so we can vote to choose our favorite book. We will have a school winner and then we will have a state winner. We started back at school on January 7th. It was a rough morning for some children, but 2 upper grade classes came in to exchange their books, and it went pretty well. Most of the children were in good humor and were ready to begin their learning. Story time book: Snowmen All Year I have story time each day with kindergarten and 1st grade classes. I also have 2 4K classes that come once a week. Snowmen All Year is our read aloud for the week. I am also going to begin to show kindergarten how to check out from the shelves using a shelf marker. Professional read: Leading for School Librarians: There Is No Other Option This past semester I was part of a book club about being a leader in your school, Dare to Lead, which was a good read, so I picked this book up to add to my learning. I am only at the end of the first chapter, but it looks like it has a lot of information I can learn from it. 5th grade is beginning their Industrial Revolution unit, so all of the social studies classes have been coming in for a "picture walk." I have 8 groups of pictures and the students study them and answer questions relating to the Industrial Revolution. The students are thinking deeply by analyzing these photos and their accompanying captions. |
