Welcome to the 10th week of library story times and checkout. This week's lesson is a review procedures and checking out. 1st grade is also moving to choosing from 4 shelves to check out from so that they can move to the entire everybody section in December and for the rest of the school year.
Our read aloud this week is Harlem Grown by Tony Hillery. This is a true story that is a SCASL picture book nominee. Our activity is designing our own gardens by drawing them. This is a true story about a man in Harlem who noticed the need for fresh fruits and vegetables in the neighborhood and set about creating a farm on a vacant lot across from P.S. 175. What he learned, and shares in his book is that students are more likely to eat something they have grown. Gardening teaches teamwork/collaboration and patience. There is also a lot of trial and error in gardening and this is helpful in teaching children not to give up, but to try again.
